Latest Cricket News – Veteran spinner Anil Kumble said that the biggest learning from his previous coaching experiences was to reduce the pressure on the players and help keep them comfortable. Kumble resigned from the post of Indian coach after the Champions Trophy final due to ‘unstable relations with captain Virat Kohli although the team did well under him.
The 48-year-old former captain is again in charge of coaching and this time he is associated with IPL team Kings XI Punjab as Director of Cricket Operations. He has previously played mentor for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Kumble told PTI on Wednesday, “With RCB we could not win the title but on two occasions we came close to the title. We had successes in the three years that I stayed with Mumbai. It was a great experience. It definitely helps (as a coach).
He said, “Ultimately it is all about the game of cricket. If you simplify it in this way, the work becomes easier. The moment you start giving importance to results, wins, trophies, you put more pressure on the players. So I learned to stay pressure-free and help the players to be comfortable. They perform well when they play spontaneously.
Kings XI Punjab have never won an IPL title and Kumble is associated with the team to end the title drought. He wants to have more experienced players in the team and will soon formulate a strategy for the IPL auction to be held in December. He said, “You learn from past experiences that you have as a player and coach but IPL is like a rollercoaster.” You need to be restrained and then support your players.
Kings XI Punjab recently decided to keep Ashwin with the team but Kumble said that it is not yet decided whether this off-spinner will become the captain again. He said, “We have not decided yet.” Some decisions are necessary but we do not need to take a decision on this. The IPL is yet to be held after five months.
There will be an auction now and we will start preparing our team from there. Kumble said, “Ashwin had a great two years but we could not get favorable results. However, we have not yet decided who will be the captain.
